The ride will begin at the beautiful Palmisano nature park, explore the Bridgeport and Pilsen neighborhoods, and end back at the park.

The goal of BUFI Bikes the Shore for Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics) eight-mile, two-hour community bicycle ride is to symbolize economic unity within the South Shore community and Chicagoland areas. This is not simply a demonstration of unity, it's designed to inspire the community, while embracing the human spirit with empowerment and resources.

Join us for an exciting and informative bike ride through the 27th Ward, hosted by CHANGE Illinois, Equiticity, and Chicago Westside Branch NAACP! Discover the ward's unique character, the story behind its borders, and how the Chicago Advisory Redistricting Commission imagined it in its community-centered People's Map. Whether you're an experienced cyclist or a beginner, this leisurely ride will be perfect for you. Take advantage of this extraordinary opportunity to explore the ward and learn how to empower yourself with us!

ROUTE DETAILS:

  • The ride will begin at Central Park and Chicago Avenue, at the Salvation Army, and we will ride to Fairgrounds Coffee at 1330 W. Fulton Market.

  • There is ample street parking at the beginning of the ride, so feel free to park and bring your bike!

  • No bike? No problem! We will have several Divvy bikes on hand for those who need them. Please specify if you would like a DIVVY in your RSVP.

  • Equiticity will have ride marshals on hand at the front and back of the group to keep everyone safe, and we also will have someone who drives along nearby with water and snacks at stops along the way.

5th Annual CRR19 Historic Bike Tour

Join us and our partners for the 5th Annual Bike Tour to commemorate the Chicago Race Riot of 1919. This is a journey of truth to bring justice and healing. This year's commemoration will feature prototypes of the glass markers created by our art studio partner, Firebird Community Arts, and brief remarks from Ald. Dowell, Ald. Lee, and others.

Check-in begins at 9:15am with opening ceremony of healing at 10am. Following the ceremony, the 2-hour bike tour will travel through the Bronzeville and Bridgeport neighborhoods. On the bike tour, you will learn about the history of Eugene Williams and how his unjust racist killing sparked the Chicago Race Riot of 1919--the worst incident of racial violence in City history and among twenty-five such incidents across the nation that came to be known as the Red Summer. After the ride, you will enjoy a a free lunch, music, and opportunity to engage with local organizations and resources tables.
